The Bombay High Court or the Mumbai High Court is one of the oldest Courts in India.

It is the highest Court in the State of Maharashtra and has Benches at Nagpur, Aurangabad and Panaji, Goa.

The jurisdiction of the High Court extends over the States of Maharashtra and Goa, and the Union Territories of Daman and Diu and Dadra and Nagar Haveli.

The court has Original and Appellate Jurisdiction.

Appeals against Bombay High Court judgements can be filed to the Supreme Court of India.

Bombay High Court

Chief Justice

Hon’ble Justice Naresh Harishchandra Patil is presently the Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court.

His Lordship was elevated as Additional Judge of Bombay High Court on 12th October 2001 and appointed as permanent Judge on 3rd October 2004.

Justice Naresh Harishchandra Patil was appointed Acting Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court on 13th August 2018.

He was appointed the Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court on 29th October, 2018.

The latest Bombay High Court Cause List is available for download.

The cause list is also referred to as the Board or the Daily Board.

It lists the matters which are to be taken up by the Benches of the High Court on a daily and weekly basis.

The Cause List or the Board can be accessed from the official website by clicking here.

The Bombay High Court cause list can be checked online.

It can be checked either party wise or advocate wise.

A copy of the cause list can be downloaded in pdf format.

How to check the cause list of the Bombay High Court?

(1) Go to the official website at https://bombayhighcourt.nic.in/

(2) Hover on the ‘causelist tab’ and select either ‘Regular Causelist’ or ‘Advocate Code causelist’ (see image)

(3) In the ‘regular cause list’ tab choose between the Bombay, Nagpur and Aurangabad Benches of the High Court.

(3) Choose between Appellate Side, Original Side and Special Court, as appropriate

(4) Choose between ‘Daily Causelist’ and ‘Weekly/ Monthly’ Causelist

(5) Choose the date for which the causelist is desired.

(6) Click the ‘Go’ button

(7) This will display more choices such as ‘Case No. wise list’, ‘Entire Cause List’, ‘Lawyer Wise List’, Judge Wise List’, ‘Party Wise List’ and ‘Officers Cause List’.

The Bombay High Court Case Status can be checked online by selecting either Case Number Wise, Advocate Name Wise, Party wise or by CIN number.

How to check the cause list of the Bombay High Court?

(1) Go to the official website at https://bombayhighcourt.nic.in/

(2) Hover on the ‘Case Status’ tab and select either Case Number Wise, Advocate Name Wise, Party wise or by CIN number (see image)

(3) If you choose the Case Number Wise tab, you will see the ‘case query’ tab. Choose between the Bombay, Nagpur and Aurangabad Benches of the High Court.

(3) Choose between the cibil, Original or Criminal Side, as appropriate

(4) Enter the Case Number and the Year of filing or enter the Filing Date in the “From Date” & “To Date” boxes.

(5) This will open a page giving the details of the case status and the various orders and judgements which have been passed therein

(6) The orders and judgements can be downloaded in pdf format

(7) A similar procedure has to be followed when accessing the case status “Party Name Wise”, “Advocate Name Wise” and “Case Identification Number” wise.

The functions of the Bombay High Court to carry out day to day business of judicial work has been divided on its establishments known as High Court Original Side and Appellate Side.

The Establishment of Appellate Side has cibil Jurisdiction & Criminal Jurisdiction and the matters are being taken up for hearing on its Benches spread over the Maharashtra State viz. Bombay, Nagpur, Aurangabad & Panjim (Goa).

Pending cases

The Bombay High Court currently has the highest number of pending cases.

There are 4.64 lakh cases pending as of September 1, 2018 of which around 56,479 cases are pending over the last 10 years.

This data was released by the National Judicial Data Grid.

The Bombay High Court’s Original side has cases relating to cibil suits, commercial suits, labour laws, company petitions and applications, contempt petitions, Income-Tax references and applications, election petitions and applications, petitions under the Guardian & Wards Act, Public Interest Litigations (PIL) etc.

There are 44,111 cases pending in the Original Side of the Bombay High Court as of March 2018.

On the Appellate Side (Criminal), there are 55,054 cases pending as of March 2018. These cases pertain to investigation of criminal cases, Habeas Corpus petitions, criminal contempt cases, cases seeking quashing of FIRs, criminal PILs, criminal appeals, confirmation of death sentences, criminal revisions, bail applications and anticipatory bail applications, among others.

On the Appellate Side (cibil), there are 1.77 lakh cases pending, of which 38,246 cases have been pending for over 10 years. The Appellate Side cibil cases arise out of city cibil court appeals, special tribunal appeals, Foreign Exchange Regulation Act (FERA) appeals, labour laws, revision petitions, contempt of court (cibil) petitions, cibil PILs, contempt appeals, family court appeals among others.

The Prothonotary of the Bombay High Court explained that there is a severe shortage of judges in the High Court.

Justice V M Kanade (Retd) said the problem of pendency would be resolved if more judges are appointed and one day is allotted to High Court judges to conduct final hearings of the matters.

Justice Abhay M Thipsay (Retd) pointed out that there is lack of expertise on the part of advocates who delay the matters and sometimes deliberately mislead the courts.

He also explained that some judges do not have expertise in the matters assigned to them and this causes delay.

Recruitment, Jobs

The Bombay High Court has regular requirement for jobs.

Presently, there is recruitment for the post of “Staff Car Driver” on the establishment of the Bombay High Court bench at Aurangabad.

There is also advertisement for recruitment to the post of Stenographer and Stenographer (Bilingual), in the High Court of Chhattisgarh, Bilaspur.

Recruitment opportunities are also there for the post of “Personal Assistant” on the establishment of the High Court of Judicature at Bombay and its benches at Nagpur and Aurangabad.

FAQs

The following are the FAQs of the Bombay High Court.

(i) Does the building have a rest room for lawyers visiting the high court from outside Mumbai. Is there a place for bath if people travel overnight with intent to do the court work in day time.

Ans: Such facility is not there. However, there are a number of cheap lodges and hotels in the vicinity of the Bombay High Court which can be availed of.

(ii) How many SC/ST judges are there in the MUMBAI HIGH COURT? Can I get the list of SC JUDGES?

Ans: A record of the cast and creed of the judges is not maintained. The judges are appointed according to their merit. There is no reservation in the appointment or recruitment of judges based on their religion, caste or creed.

(iii) Does the Bombay High Court have a legal aid department?

Ans: Yes. Legal aid is provided to litigants who are not able to engage a lawyer or advocate on their own because of their indigent status.

(iv) Is there live CCTV recording in the Court rooms?

Ans: The premises of the High Court are covered by CCTV. However, the proceedings are not recorded live at present.

Reviews

The following are the reviews of the Bombay High Court as per litigants and the public.

(i) The exquisite British architecture will send you travelling through time. The century and a half old building still stands strong, with its spiral stair towers and high roof courtrooms and its beautiful arches.

(ii) This is one of the powerful high Court of India. The reason is simply it’s location which is Mumbai. It has given many justices in Supreme Court of India. This high Court is one of the oldest high Courts of India as initially it was Madras.

(iii) One of the best high court in all over India the infrastructure looks attractive, its build in the the time of British. Approx It was inaugurated on August 14, 1862 under the High Courts Act 1861.

(iv) The building was built during the british era and now serve as high court for Maharashtra. It is a beautiful building built with utmost care for it’s aesthetic appearance. Must visit place!

(v) Saw this on our walk from Fashion Street to the Gateway of India and was shocked at how lovely this government building was. Not certain if you can go inside however the outside of the building looks terribly nice

(vi) Gothic design high court in mumbai

(viii) The first Chief Justice, the Attorney Generaland Solicitor General of Independent Indiawere from this court. Since India’s Independence, 22 judges from this court have been elevated to the Supreme Court and 8 of them have been Chief Justice

(ix) Its a beautiful peaceful place .. Decent washrooms and canteen isnt fancy but food is good n clean. Good people

(x) Situated near Mumbai University and Churchgate Station , Mumbai High Court Building is four storeyed having excellent example of Indian architecture.

(xi) This place needs better facilities for food and seating outside the courtroom. Also washrooms are in dire need of cleanliness

(xii) Bombay high court. Where all mumbaikars gets justice, but i would request honourable court chief justices, jujdges, registrars lawyers etc to solve all pending casses immediately, people have lots of trust on high court.
