Text of Complaint by S Choudhury:

On 24 July 2022, while looking for a PG accommodation in South Delhi, I came across the advertisement of Anil PG in Lajpat Nagar on Magicbrics. Upon providing my contact details, Magicbrics sent me the contact no. of the owner of the PG, Anil Kumar (+91-7438953773). I called him to enquire if he had vacant rooms. He told me that he had 2-3 rooms available in the PG. He sent me a few pictures on WA. When I told him that I liked the pictures and would want to visit the PG physically, he told me I would need an entry slip to enter the premises of the PG and asked me to pay Rs.2000. He sent a QR code (in the name of one Amit Kumar) on WA and asked me to transfer the money using any UPI. He then referred me to Vikas Patel (+91-7232934575), and told me that Vikas is the manager and I have to call him for knowing the next procedure. He said that Vikas would generate the slip and share with me on WA and I would need to show the slip to the security guard at the gate. When I asked him the address of the PG, he denied to provide it and said all the details would be mentioned on the entry slip. He also told me that if I did not like the room, Rs. 2000 would be refunded to me and if I liked the room, it would be adjusted with the security deposit.
Then I got a call from Vikas Patel on WhatsApp. He said that I would need to transfer Rs. 8010 (including refund charge of Rs. 10) for him to complete the process of generating the slip and once it is generated, he would refund 8000. After I paid him 8010, he still did not generate the slip. He said the process was 99% complete and extracted further 20000 in 3 instalments by threatening me that if I don’t transfer the money to him, He would not refund me anything at all.
The scam did not end here. After extracting 30000 from me, they further demanded Rs. 14500 and my GST number at which point, already knowing that I was trapped and would be losing more in order to recover the amount already lost, I refused to pay any more.
I reported the whole incident to the cyber crime portal and immediately lodged an official complaint to the Cyber Police station South East Delhi.
This scam is happening not only in Delhi but other cities like Mumbai, Pune, Bangalore etc. These fraudsters are very much active till today. Most of the cases they are using the names of Anil Kumar and Vikas Patel. MagicBrics should report these fraudsters to Police and should not let them use their portal to cheat people.
