I used Paytm UPI method to make a payment of Rs 565 on 8th July 2020 to the merchant by scanning QR code. Initially payment went under process and took long time. After a few moments, payment showing as processed on my mobile, but when I checked with the merchant, he received no notification. I asked him to check his bank account(SBI) to which they checked and found no transaction.
I have to make him another payment of similar amount. Again I went to check on the next day whether funds have now credited to the merchant’s account thinking if it might have took some time but the result was same. I raised this Paytm to which Paytm replies that the payment was successful from their end and have ended up in merchant’s AXIS bank. I asked merchant about it, but they denied having any AXIS bank account.
The Paytm asked then me to contact sending bank(HDFC) as Paytm only act as mediator. HDFC bank also assured me that the payment was successful and credited in merchant’s account on 14th July 2020. If the merchant still haven’t received the funds, please ask the merchant to provide bank statement. I quickly asked the merchant to provide bank statement for that period. He was kind enough to provide.
HDFC bank customer service did not provide any account details of the merchant as to where the payment bank citing security reasons. However kept on repeating same thing that the payment was successfully credited to merchant in the number of emails that I sent to and fro. I also warned them about raising this with Ombudsman with no joy.
Now I felt cheated, as I do not know whom to blame as only the merchant is cooperating with me and is ready to share account details but HDFC bank and Paytm have left me with no option and to believe that my money was lost and is never coming back
