I a 21-year-old female and my 20-year-old female friend went for dinner in the Bengaluru restaurant – Daysie: all day casual bar. We were seated and bought our food, but the same was not served between the two people and when it was time to pay, I asked for the bill. I was provided with the same, but a service charge amounting to rs. 102 was added. As usual, I asked a waiter to remove it, saying that it was my discretion if I wanted to pay the charge or not. The waiter started arguing with me saying that they had clearly mentioned at the entrance and on the menu that I would have to pay the charge. I argued that forcing me to pay the charge would be illegal. Furthermore, no such poster or board was visible at the entrance and the menu was very vague. It said “10% service charge and govt taxes as applicable”, which in my understanding was in accordance with my discretion and the law. Soon the manager arrived and our table was crowded. There were at least 2 other waiters surrounding our table and listening to the conversation. The manager repeated the same thing as the waiter and said that this service charge was a way of paying salary to the waiters. The manager and the two waiters kept on staring and trying to convince us to pay the charge. We were then ultimately forced to pay the charge.
