I subscribed to a 399_50gb per month datacard plan from Airtel (Airtel number 9831195487) during my visit to Kolkata in December, 2018. I visited the Airtel store to close my account before leaving Kolkata at the end of the month, but the staff there refused to do it and said that I should close the account online. Regardless, I paid Rs. 500, leaving the account with a credit balance. When I received the emailed invoice, showing a credit balance of Rs. 74.73, I tried to close the account online and found out that there was no way for me to close the account online. I emailed [email protected] requesting help with closing the account, but received no reply. I then persuaded a (local) relative to go to the local store to close the account (when the balance was still -74.73), but people at the store said they could not find the account or the bill, and to just ignore it. After my relative visited the store in January, I did not hear anything from Airtel for two and half months, so I thought it was taken care of, but I started getting new bills from Airtel again in March. Once again, there doesn’t seem to be any options for me to do anything about them. During all of this, I have also worked repeatedly with the Airtel customer service via online messenger, but the problem has still not been resolved. Each time I explain everything to the representative all over again, and they politely say they will address the problem and get back to me, but then nothing happens until I initiate online conversation again and then the same cycle is repeated. There were two occasions when the Airtel representative actually called me in the US, and (after I explained everything each time) assured me that they will drop the charges as a one-time courtesy and close the account, but this has not happened.
I haven’t used the service since the beginning of January, and despite my attempts I am not able to discontinue the service, while Airtel keeps charging me more money. I even tried to pay the charges online (even though they shouldn’t have been charged), but the payment site would not accept my US credit card. I am now getting invoices with past due amount of Rs. 1543.35.
I hope you can intervene with Airtel on my behalf to get them to drop the charges and close the account (as they promised several times). Please let me know if you need further information from me. Thank you.
