Jio allows data only recharge and it gives months of validity. Even with core balance, SMS and calls do not work.
Regardless of what their current policy is, this nasty practice should be illegal, people should be able to use core balance without expensive recharge options.
Given they are going above and beyond to prevent people from being able to afford recharge plans by curtng down affordable recharge options or increasing prices on regular basis, usability of core balance should be a right for every citizen with sim (with any telecom provider, not just jio).
Another option would be giving limited number of SMS and limited number of calls per day, maybe 2 or three SMS per day and a minute of call per day.
This has to enforced with law, or else by the end of the year, and average Indian citizen, or anyone like a daily wage worker, or anyone that cares about their expenses will have to spend heavy percentage of their earnings on recharges alone.
Just by ensuring the absolute minimum accessibility to bare minimum telecom services like a minute of call per day and/or two or three SMS per day, this constant pressure to spend heavy sum for necessary survival tools can be solved.
They could even have fixed days of validity for the core recharge and it would still be a win win situation for the company and the user.
